I read this book from start to finish in one day because it was impossible to put it down. Highly relatable, "real", and courageous; Jackie has managed to put her story into this eloquent collection of poems in such a way that I feel lighter and somewhat liberated, as many of her experiences are similar to mine which I have kept hidden in fear and shame. This book is awesome. Very relatable and heartfelt. In this beautifully put together collection, there is a poem for everyone's situation. I would recommend it to anyone who needs some spiritual and cultural uplifting...don't we all!?
THE POETESS REIGNS is a riotous, sometimes rhythmic ride through SistahGirl devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of Him tested by life and illness. Jacqueline Ray Phillips provides us with a slim volume of poetry that sometimes stumbles in terms of beat/rhythm, yet reaches, ever faithfully and with eyes always looking up, for salvation from Our Lord.
There are moments, as in "The Circle," when the rhythm is elemental, but concise
Maker of a circle
Maker of the twin
Measurement of a circumference
A sphere where the rains come in ....
... and moments, too many, where the rhythm is off in its fluidity
Ignorance is poor
Selfish and cruel
Your body speaks loud and clear
Listen and act for it needs knowledge for the fuel
Everything is connected eager to take the stage
When deprived of its needs
It will turn on you in a rage .....
Phillips is not a studied, erudite poet, but she is a poetess of the streets, whom one can see bringing the word of Jesus as she tools along in her hooptie
So I cope and rationalize
Allowing my mind to run and fantasize
Complexities woven deeper and deeper
Help me Father, you are my keeper
So I keep pressing, pushing on the grind
Simply stated, it's not even worth my time .....
As a former professor who has studied and taught literature for the majority of my life, I wish for Phillips time spent in a creative writing program, reading the greatest of African American, Latina, Asian, and Caucasian as well as Native American poets of this and prior generations. I think she would find there a camaraderie that bespeaks the belief in something greater, and the yearning for a peace that often eludes those not quite at the top of society's ladder.
Phillips sees well that experience of less than and dramatizes it in effective poems such as "For Life" and "Perhaps." In "For Life," she reveals a sympathy for those behind bars that is powerfully and authentically rendered. In "Perhaps," we see from behind the eyes of a receiver of "handouts" exactly how those who assist her view her.
Phillips is a poet in need of further academic study to really achieve the heights I imagine she would like to attain. Yet the yearning is here, plain and raw, in THE POETESS REIGNS. I pray that she takes up the academic study of poetry full-time so that her art can reach the level her heart clearly wants to claim.
In the interim, we will ride along with her in her hooptie, praising God.
